I’m probably the only one in the world who wishes David Bowie did a cop drama that would be put on prime time network television. Oh and he has to be wearing the Labyrinth costume most of the time or at least variations of it. And all of the crimes he solves have to involve something spooky and supernatural, like space farts. Think a more dramatic Scooby Doo for the glam rock set.

I’ve been feeling a little low lately, so I decided to make up a list of things that I enjoy:

The sound of a girl’s laugh, particularly snorts, chortles, or cackling embarrassing laughs.
The feeling of passing a slower car by downshifting gears manually and revving to a higher RPM.
The feeling of riding my bike downhill, no handed with my arms out letting the wind lick my fingertips
Anything that qualifies as horseplay
The sensation of being able fix something with tools, and the sense of pride in making something work by an unusual solution.
Twinings earl grey, any thick oak-y tasting scotch with a smooth finish, and vanilla ice cream and waffles
The smell of a woman’s dry hair after a shower.
The high of finishing a good book.
The anticipation of travelling, no matter where the journey ends up.
The moment which a sidelong glance is all that’s needed to confirm that an experience is being mutually shared.
The sound of heels or leather shoes clipping along on the sidewalk.

Not to pull a “I’m Al Gore, I invented the internet”, but I had this idea two years ago.

[MegaUpload was set to]… launch a music service called MegaBox that could have enabled artists to give away their music for free and get paid by MegaUpload via secondary revenue that may have been generated by tools such as advertising. Given the size of MegaUpload, at the time of its shutdown the 13th largest website, hosted on more than a thousand servers and more than 1 billion visitors every month, MegaUpload could have been a serious threat in such a venture for the music industry.

Ultimately the biggest problem one faces with this new business model is the profiting of others on music which the uploader does not own, but chooses to host on the service anyway. The Soundscan technology (a rudimentary audio sampling technology used by the industry to determine things like piracy and illegal usage) is no better than using a popular mobile application like Shazam in determining whether or not a song is registered. Thousands if not millions of songs are not database cataloged because of poor recordings or conflicting versions of remixes, bootlegs and other pirated tweaks (using such techniques as speeding up or slowing down the songs signatures to elude DCMA technology).

As much I like the idea that music, in any digital format, will become inevitably free in the next few years and artists will have to find alternative revenue methods, I see a catastrophic legal gray area in this method. If the industry was smart and united in investing large monitoring systems of music traffic, they would see that it will be more beneficial in merely auditing all types of music, instead of finding methods in which to control the flow of music to the consumer. The e-commerce market has already determined that the sale of the digital file is dead. Because of the tenacity of online piracy, combating such an evolutionary step in distribution is a waste of resources.If you make the resources for soundscan friendly to distributors and transparent to consumers , the amount of piracy will decrease because the consumer will realize how directly they are affecting artist.

I look at it this way, if the artists are represented by their fans (through their choice of where to consume music), then it only serves the labels and the industry as a whole to create transparent and informational tools that seek to collect data, instead of enforcing where the data came from. This isn’t to say that the labels should turn a blind eye to someone else profiting of another’s music without accrediting a source, but it is to say that the approach must one in which the distributors are responsible for monitoring users with registered content not the labels. Who knows, maybe the next evolution of file sharing will be entirely ad-revenue based?
